How the paycheck calculator works

This calculator estimates your annual take-home pay by subtracting four major taxes from your gross salary: federal income tax, state income tax, Social Security, and Medicare. It then divides the annual take-home figure into monthly, biweekly, and weekly amounts.

Federal income tax

Federal tax is calculated using the 2025 single-filer brackets, starting at 10% on the first $11,925 of taxable income and rising to 37% above $626,350. The calculator applies the 2025 standard deduction of $15,000 before running income through the brackets.

State income tax

State income tax varies dramatically. Texas has no state income tax, so a Texas resident keeps every dollar that survives federal tax and FICA. New York ranges from 4% to 10.3% across eight brackets. Californiaranges from 1% to 13.3% across nine brackets, including the country's highest top marginal rate.

Social Security and Medicare (FICA)

FICA taxes are flat: 6.2% Social Security on wages up to $176,100 (the 2025 wage base) and 1.45% Medicare on all wages with no cap. Together they reduce your paycheck by 7.65% before any income tax is calculated.

What the calculator does not include

This is a quick estimate. It does not account for pre-tax deductions like 401(k) contributions, health insurance premiums, HSA contributions, or other withholdings that lower your taxable income. It also assumes single-filer status. For a more detailed breakdown, use our tax bracket calculator or W-4 withholding estimator.
