How Sales Tax Works in the US

1

State Level

45 states plus Washington DC impose a state-level sales tax. Rates range from 2.9% (Colorado) to 7.25% (California). Five states — Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon — have no state sales tax.

2

Local Add-Ons

Many states allow counties, cities, and special districts to add their own sales tax on top of the state rate. Combined rates can reach 10%+ in some areas (e.g., parts of Alabama, Louisiana, and Oklahoma). This calculator shows state-level rates only.

What's Taxable?

Most tangible personal goods are taxable. Services, groceries, prescription drugs, and clothing are exempt or taxed at lower rates in some states. Each state defines its own tax base — what's taxable in California may be exempt in Pennsylvania.

States With No Sales Tax

Five US states have no state-level general sales tax. If you're shopping or running a business in these states, you won't pay state sales tax:

Sales Tax Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate sales tax on a purchase?

Multiply the purchase price by the sales tax rate (as a decimal). For example, a $100 item in California (7.25% rate): $100 x 0.0725 = $7.25 tax. Total = $107.25. Use the calculator above to get instant results for any state.

Does this calculator include local sales tax?

This calculator shows state-level rates only. Local rates (county, city, special district) can add 1-5% on top of the state rate. Check your local tax authority for combined rates specific to your address.

Which states have the highest combined sales tax?

When combining state and local rates, the highest combined rates are found in Louisiana (up to 11.625%), Arkansas (up to 11.625%), Illinois (up to 11%), California (up to 10.50%), and Tennessee (up to 9.75%). State-level rates alone don't tell the full story.

Are services subject to sales tax?

It varies by state. Some states tax services broadly (Hawaii, New Mexico, South Dakota), while others tax only specific services like car repairs or landscaping. Most states exempt medical services, education, and financial services from sales tax.

Is online shopping subject to sales tax?

Yes. Since the 2018 South Dakota v. Wayfair Supreme Court decision, states can require online retailers to collect sales tax even if they have no physical presence in the state. When you buy online, you generally pay the sales tax rate for your delivery address.

What items are exempt from sales tax?

Common exemptions include most grocery food items, prescription drugs, medical devices, and clothing in some states (Pennsylvania, Minnesota, New Jersey). Each state publishes a full list of taxable and exempt items on their Department of Revenue website.

How often do state sales tax rates change?

State-level rates change infrequently — most states adjust rates through legislation. Local rates change more often as cities and counties pass new ordinances. This calculator is updated for the 2025 tax year. For the most current rates, check your state's Department of Revenue.

Is this sales tax calculator free?

Yes, completely free. No signup, no email, no limits. Enter any price and select any state to get instant results. You can also compare rates between two states side by side.
